The reasons are vague and ambiguous. Should definitely stay opt-in.
Next thing you'll know is they start injecting ads into the streams
ala utUbe...
(tailored to your online habits of course).
Unfortunately SBS on Demand did both of these things (sign up and ads)
ages ago. There are benefits to being logged in to SBS but it would be
nice if it worked without it.
Free tip: SBS on my TV is beautifully ad-free with PiHole network-level
ad blocking.
