Fwd: Information Age – News for Australia’s ICT Professionals

A word from the Editor

There was no doubt the Latitude Financial breach was going to get uglier.

When the finance company announced to the ASX a week ago that criminals had got
into its systems, it disclosed that around 100,000 driver licences had been
compromised.

Now we know passport and Medicare details were also snatched in the breach that
“remains active”, and that the company has found further evidence of “large
scale information theft”. There will almost certainly be more to come.

The popularity of ChatGPT has indicated to the masses what lies ahead in the
realm of AI possibilities. We can now fabricate voice, images, and entire
documents! But who is overseeing this revolutionary technology and making sure
all the players are playing fair? Until now, the AI industry has regulated
itself but that doesn’t always work. The government has made it very clear it
is prepared to step in.

In other news, NBN Co sacks 500 staff; Google denies training its Bard AI on
your emails; Jobs and Skills Australia to be made permanent; the world of
fruit-picking robotics; and ACS VP of Communities Jo Stewart Rattray reflects
on learnings from 67th Commission on the Status of Women held in the UN General
Assembly in New York.
