A man claims to have suffered a week-long smart home “lockout” ...

Remarkably honest, admitting being silly enough to have a smart home with no manual backup.

I am seriously considering discontinuing my use ...

Having been locked out for a week and only "considering" discontinuing use? Is a form of addiction to automation?

“If you bought a toaster ... you still own the
toaster..."

Yes, so buy stuff which doesn't require a working Internet connection, and a remote cloud based application owned by a corporation, to work. How hard can that be to understand, even before being locked out for a week?

ps: I am buying a new burglar alarm, as my 20th Century one went off recently, & annoyed the neighbors. A new unit costs about one tenth the old one. It comes with Internet access, and an App, but does still have a control panel and key fobs (some now have no interface except the App). Then there are optional remotely operating door locks. Before I know it, I really will be locked out of my home. ;-)
