. I was shocked. There was far more nihilism at work than I realised. Brief
summary of a much larger document -
Since taking office in January 2025, the Trump administration has
drastically reshaped the US research and academic landscape. Key science
agencies are led by individuals hostile to science, leading to mass
layoffs, the deletion of climate and health data, and the termination of
thousands of research grants, especially in politically sensitive areas
like climate, gender, and vaccines. Budget cuts are widespread, affecting
institutions like NASA, NIH, NSF, and the Department of Education. Many
academic terms are now banned from use in official documents, effectively
censoring entire research areas.
Researchers?especially noncitizens?face visa revocations and deportations,
often for political speech. Major universities are losing federal funding,
facing tax threats, and undergoing investigations over DEI and antisemitism
policies. Faculty and students report fear, hiring freezes, and declining
confidence in the future of academia. Despite this, collective resistance
is growing via lawsuits, open letters, petitions, and faculty compacts.
Some university leaders have spoken out, while others opt for
behind-the-scenes negotiation.
Open Access policies from the previous administration remain in place, but
some repositories have been defunded or censored. Experts urge hosting
research in independent, international repositories to safeguard against
government interference. European institutions are advised to collaborate
globally and diversify their data storage.
