I just began the process of transferring a domain or two away from Network Solutions. It was simple enough, but you'd want your wits about you and degree of self-confidence.
The first hurdle is that the link to request an authorisation code is buried in light blue type on a white background in 6-point type. If you click it you get a red icon with an exclamation mark in it and the word "Stop! in red. The text says that before you transfer away from NetSol, they want to offer you a special rate on renewals - $10. The accept button has the focus. If you proceed, you get told "Warning! You have requested a transfer... you assume all risks... your details may be exposed...!" And you have to check a box to acknowledge it all. Shaken but undeterred you check the box and proceed. NetSol presents you with a little form where you can tell them where you are transferring to and why. It doesn't look like you can bypass this form, but if you just click the "Request authorization code" button they don't stop you. Finally you get two radio buttons and a check box - do you want to unlock the domain name? Do you want an auth code? Yes! Yes I do! Click! Then a rather sullen "Your auth code will be mailed to you within three days". Three days?!? And why email it? That's hardly secure. Far more secure to display it, surely, via the SSL link all this has been going on over? Anyway, I trust I will see an auth code or two in the next few days. Compare this to, by way of example, NetRegistry. Log in, click on the domain name, click to see your auth code. I can only assume NetSol is haemorrhaging domain names. There's a definite air of desperation about their website.
