I just don't get this. Have you ever heard of the "Fertile Crescent"? This was an extensive fertile region where the agricultural revolution that produced the surpluses that generated western civilisation occurred. I use the quotes because it's the name is a kind of a joke now. The Fertile Crescent has been largely transformed to a barren area of sand and rock. And it was done with fully organic farming and without the aid of neoliberal capitalism. The collapse of the Mayan civilisation was also brought about by environmental degradation. Again without the aid of neoliberal ideologies. The list goes on and on. The Chinese and the Soviets proved quite handy at environmental destruction arguably guided by principles diametrically opposed to neoliberal capitalism. (Also, arguably not.)
IMHO the big difference now is that we have unprecedented population numbers and array of technologies to pump the process. If anything, the mindset has improved, just not as fast and uniformly as the capability for destruction. Rabbits can do something similar without the aid of any ideology at all (as a quick look in my suburban backyard reveals.)
