Not exactly an original idea. The UK launched an "Academy for Sustainable Communities" in 2005. The UK initiative is for training people in community engagement, partnership working, project management and leadership: http://www.ascskills.org.uk/what-we-do.html The Australian proposal to do this through the NBN is a bit dated. In the education community we have moved from thinking about classroom education, through computer education and now on to mobile education involving a social component. The NBN is no use for this, as it is a fixed, not mobile, infrastructure. One of the other Policy Hack proposals was "Encouraging universities to engage with industry" which is a good aim, but I don;t think the proposed method of "boosting research and development funding to universities" is a good way to do it. Instead I suggest providing the funding for training students in innovation and entrepreneurship. With that training the students will then know how to work with industry. The problem at present is that the university researchers simply do not know how to communicate with industry. The Innovation ACT competition provides an excellent example of how to teach these skills and I am designing some m-learning training materials to complement it: http://blog.highereducationwhisperer.com/search/label/Designing%20an%20Innovation%20Course ps: The #PolicyHack Outcomes report is available at: https://startupaus.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Outcomes-document-PolicyHack.pdf -- Tom Worthington FACS CP, TomW Communications Pty Ltd. t: 0419496150 The Higher Education Whisperer http://blog.highereducationwhisperer.com/ PO Box 13, Belconnen ACT 2617, Australia http://www.tomw.net.au Liability limited by a scheme approved under Professional Standards Legislation Adjunct Senior Lecturer, Research School of Computer Science, Australian National University http://cs.anu.edu.au/courses/COMP7310/ _______________________________________________ Link mailing list [email protected] http://mailman.anu.edu.au/mailman/listinfo/link
