Among other things, the redesigned network is based on a star (hub &
spoke) topology. Plagued by points of failure that will put substantial
parts of the network out of action when things go wrong.
The original plan was for a ring topology. Multiple redundancy; more robust.
We'll probably end up paying the better part of $100 billion (before our
politicians try to convince us that the NBN is "finished"). At that
point, we'll be lucky to get $25 billion (if we can find anyone silly
enough to buy it). The network will prove so unstable and perform so
poorly that we'll need to rebuild most of it. Add another $200 billion.
At that point, if we can find a buyer, we might get $100 billion.
Of course, telecommunications is so valuable to the nation that any
politician treacherous enough to sell the infrastructure again (after
the disaster that John Howard imposed on us) deserves to be strangled
with their own entrails.
Seriously, have you noticed those high points, out front of Parliament
House in Canberra? I've come to the conclusion that they were put there
for lynching convenience. And the sins of the parents shall the visited
upon the offspring, yea unto the last generation. ;)
