The mobile phone was a logical development of the wired variety which had 
proved its usefulness since the 19th century, and the mobile radio which also 
had decades of demonstrated usefulness.

The browser is a publishing medium, like the book.  It was adapted for use on 
data networks over a period of about 10 years (remember SGML? CERN?) and 
something was certainly needed.

But I suggest the internet-connected rubbish tin will join a long list of 
products we don't need - think of Cinerama and quadraphonic sound.
