The mobile phone was a logical development of the wired variety which had proved its usefulness since the 19th century, and the mobile radio which also had decades of demonstrated usefulness. The browser is a publishing medium, like the book. It was adapted for use on data networks over a period of about 10 years (remember SGML? CERN?) and something was certainly needed. But I suggest the internet-connected rubbish tin will join a long list of products we don't need - think of Cinerama and quadraphonic sound.
