Wonderful opportunity for puns:

"Australian driver-less research stuck in slow lane,
with policy makers asleep at the wheel." ;-)

More seriously, Australia does have some expertise in Seeing Machines, a company spun off ANU research. Their technology is in the 2018 Cadillac CT6 car, and Caterpillar trucks. https://blog.tomw.net.au/2017/12/canberra-start-up-overnight-success.html

What Seeing Machines work has shown is that it is better to start with something other than privately owned passenger cars. I suggest Australia should look at areas such as autonomous farm and mining equipment, not cars. Australia has lots of farms, and mines, and we don't have any car factories.

As the Australian Driverless Vehicle Initiative (ADVI) says, designing and building autonomous vehicles will create some jobs, but only a tiny fraction of the number of driving jobs lost.

If the ADVI thinks we need government policy, I suggest they write some. There is an federal election coming up, so this week I have been writing IT policy for ACS to put to the parties.
