Apple has used NTP for decades now. NTPv3 was 1992, NTPv4 2010.
My strong impression has been that the synch techniques Apple uses are
good enough for well-under sub-second synch with 'the real time'.
That said:
(1) the OS 10.4 time-service (current 2005-07) had a serious bug,
which was never fixed, which meant you had to open the System
Preferences window in order to force a resynch!
(2) Apple's Asia time-servers clearly don't keep an eye on one
another, because otherwise the current problem would never have been
noticed by a casual user.
