Back in 2001 I was using BlackIce intrusion detection software.

http://blackice-pc-protection.networkice.com

It is an intrusion detection system. When I had it installed I did not see any
server software for it, I just installed the BlackIce software and then it
protected my computer.

I would have had an anti-virus as well, but I don't remember what it was.

At one point in time instead of BlackIce I had DShield and at another point in
time I had MyNetWatchman. All these are intrusion detection systems, they
report about invalid port connection attempts to send the data to their server
system which tracks the spreads of malware etc across the internet from it's
many sensor softwares worldwide, allowing you to be warned.
