It is technically easy to reduce the carbon emissions cased by the Internet, but hard to find an incentive for anyone in particular to do it.

I have been teaching students at ANU how to estimate the carbon emissions from IT in an organization, then write a report for their boss on how to reduce it. The estimates are technically easy, as are the reduction methods, but the hard part is to find an incentive for someone to do it. This is especially difficult with "free" web based services. As bandwidth increases, and computers become more powerful, there is less pressure to make applications efficient. http://www.tomw.net.au/ict_sustainability/
