Karl,
Probably the biggest benefit is people spend more time in their local
community. While the City of Sydney has emptied - Inner West Local
Government Area is now busy. Great to see everyone out walking and
cycling! Workplaces are as much about social as economic. Video and
Telephone surveillance is not the same.
Technology wise - as my first job in 1982 was as node liason officer on
CSIRONET perhaps not much technology has changed. By the way, I
recommended we go with a Northstar and CPM.... Then an "Office
Automation Techical Analyst" and even looked at "remote access for a
university in 1997!
The WWW is amazing, the user friendliness of social media and video
conferencing software helps and we have Linux and open source software...
Carbon emissions from Transport is down - this was growing before
whereas other emissions were dropping.
The transport sector is the fastest growing contributor to climate
emissions. Growth in energy use is higher for the transport sector
than any other end-use sector. The main drivers of global transport
energy growth are land transport, mostly light-duty vehicles, such as
cars, as well as freight transport.

Marghanita,
the article talks about the obvious stuff like bosses who only believe
people are working when they can be seen to be working.
It talks about how people like to be together when teleworking, and St
Job's vision of serendipity on the way to the dunny.
But what have we gained, what works better now that we have teleworking?
I know that having multiple people simultaneously editing one document
such
as google docs and office365 was unusual prior to now. But that's a
symptom, rather than a thing which is better.
What new things should we expect because of this situation?
Karl
I am sure we all have stories to tell from Teleworking Fantasies to
COVID-19 Reality.
By the way, I understand (from a friend 14 Feb 2020 email) that in the
lock down across China from January kids moved to e-learning with
schools only planned to open on 1 April...this seams to be now happening.
