I have been pleasantly surprised how quickly many manual processing steps have been eliminated in Australia due to COVID-19. As an example, I don't sign for a prescription at the pharmacist. Many meetings are being held online, along with court hearings, oath taking, and most university education.

But there are curious anachronisms in the US higher education system. My US colleagues have been asking which fax gateway to use, what electronic signature system, and if they should equip their classrooms for Internet access.

There is still some way to go in Australia. Many of my Australian colleagues are struggling with how to conduct an end of semester examination online. On the one hand they are suspicious of exam technology which has been in routine use elsewhere for years. But on the other hand they are not willing to replace a high stakes end of semester examination, with better forms of assessment.
