Dear Ian: I run links in text, so I have no comment about your post, but my links problems are restricted to its failure to negotiate many scripts. My 2.1 prerelease18 version is better than modern versions. Most recently I failed to reclaim my LQ password. Perhaps my SSL is out of date as well.
But may I run on off-topic by saying how wonderfully PINE runs as a mailer alongside links in text. My bugbare of many years is Fetchmail which frequently locks up with the well known "domain name must resolve" problem. Compiling recent versions helped but did not solve this problem.
