Hi, Up to Fedora 10, I was on the same book with you. I've been on this before with ESD, then KDE's aRTs, and I had quite a crappy experience with Pulse Audio before. Apparently now things are much better: The latest skype for Linux (which was released 2 days ago, btw) has an excellent Pulse audio support, so now I can use Skype, mplayer, Virtual Box, Pidgin, all using the sound device through Pulse Audio at once (talking on skype while watching some clips) and it's working really great.
I know that ALSA does have mixing capabilities, but so far, it seems PulseAudio has good performance even when it comes to real time communications.
