Thanks for the advise. I use openSUSE 11.4 which routinely enables everything in the kernel. I haven't checked, because there is no kernel config file installed.

It also turned out that if I looked close enough into the package manager there was a development package. It is called libv4l-devel. So now I have Linphone with libv4l enabled. Not that it makes much of a difference as far as I can tell
