You're probably better off figuring it out on the asterisk side.
Maybe something like this:
exten => _XXX.,1,Answer()
same => n,Set(regx="([0-9]+)")
same => n,Set(number=$["${EXTEN}" : ${regx}]) ; strip everything but
digits
same => n,...
