The new network drivers require the Channel Device
Layer to be configured ( /etc/chandev.conf ) so the
old devno_portno things don't apply anymore. Read the
latest level of the Device Driver documentation, that
shows how to configure the interfaces.
My experience with the SuSE install was that it does
generate the proper config files, so I'm not sure why
yours did not.
