There are a bunch of instructions to perform various operations on 'decimal' numbers in several formats. Look at chapter 8 of the 'Principles of Operations', e.g. at http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com:80/cgi-bin/bookmgr_OS390/BOOKS/dz9ar006/8.0 You'll have to use inline assembly, gcc never generates these instructions by itself currently.
