Part of this confusion may be because the dasd driver sometimes was upset
about whatever was left on the disk. A plain CMS FORMAT first would allow
the first channel programs to complete without errors and let the dasd driver
recognize the device. Anything CMS  did there would be overwritten.

Might be, I think it may be a simple as loading the DIAG and FBA dasd
modules as well during the install, I promised Florian to look into that. The
scheme was already pretty complicated before the module got split in 3
parts and dynamic attach/detach was added.
