We have installed UDB DB2 V7.2(a bit tricky!) and WAS-AE 3.5.
# Kernel is now 2.4.7

By du -s *, we've got:
/home   7336
/opt  173536
so far.

N.B. Actually, there are NO real applications (including DBs) on it.
     You may need much more space for DBs which will be created under /home/<db2owner>.

About under /usr, we haven't calculated the difference so we are unable to answer 
meaningful figure.

We have set 512M. Working fairly fine, but this is the "minimum" I suppose.
# We'd started with 256M and that was awful. It seems the whole system was dormant.
