Well, more readable but still sometimes nearly useless!
There are still too many messages that say
contact your system programmer
Yeah, that's me, and I don't know what to do either! I have noticed in
some of the newer products and features that they have expanded this to:
User Response: Contact your system programmer.
System Programmer Response: Contact the IBM Support Center.
But my favorite has to be along the lines of:
Operator Response: Make sure you are running xxx under the
correct user ID. You must check the xxx virtual machine
directory for the correct IUCV authorization (that is, it
must have an "IUCV xxx" entry).
I have never worked at an installation where the operators had that
sort of access. They didn't have sysadmin, root or MAINT access!
And I have never worked at an installation where any users had a
messages and codes manual. Operations usually had one somewhere
but they probably "misplaced" it to the back corner behind the
air handler!
Good Luck!

While even VM has some messages that are as cryptic as that "MVS" style
message,
there has been a trend in recent (past 8+ years) versions of VM to make new
messages actually be readable... now, it doesn't always work, but on the
whole I
think that VM's messages are indeed much more capable of "standing alone"
for
the (relative) novice than the example above... ;-)
In my (brief) "unix world" experience (be it Linux or one of the
alternatives),
there are both good and bad examples of messages being "sufficient &
understandable" in there too.
