Oh dear. I apologize for being stupid again. I think Mr Joachim Schroeder from SuSE posted on the list that a beta version would be made available for download http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvtype?LINUX-VM.21461 and with the GA out I concluded this would have happened. I did not look for it but ran into someone who held a beta copy and wanted to have that installed. Is there anything I can do to take away the impression that my interest in the SuSE distribution has become less? The process I outlined for getting to a Linux 2.4 kernel was a short route with problems. For the real thing you also want the kernel headers to be up-to-date and you probably want to update glibc and then rebuild your tools again to go to the new ELF magic number, etc. That is a lot of work, and that is IMHO wat distributions are for. We've had the discussions about the lincences already. I find it hard to see how it is attractive for a distributor to reject the spare time of a lot of us, but they'll know better. Rob
