CDs make a handy archive. If you download ISO images then you can create and recreate the same install tree at will, and others can get precisely the same tree. If you download THEIR tree, what you get might not be precisely the same. Differences may be small, insignificant even, but when things go wrong I like to be able to rule out possible problems.
