Phil,

You'll have to use the chandev interface to get it to recognize the new
device dynamically, and then update /etc/chandev.conf to make the change
"permanent" for future system reboots.  I would guess (although I don't
know) that YaST would handle this for you.  I would try that first.  Again,
without a 2.4 system to check, try:
yast->System administration->Network configuration->Network base
configuration

Make sure you activate the device before you leave that screen.  I tend to
forget it.

I was wondering how to add a second CTC definition to a SuSE 2.4
system.  The vctc is defined and configured in the virtual machine but
