Thanks Mark. We are able to ping the printers and telnet to the Jetdirect
box. We are also able to ping and telnet back to the MVS systems. We just
use the basic lpr, and my staff add printers with Yast so the procedure
looks simple enough. Our current printcap has over 400 printers defined,
and we last boot the linux partition when we had less than 100 printers, so
we decide to cut it down on size (50 printers at a time) to make sure that
the size is not an issue. When the printcap file is cut down to contains
200 printers, the lpd starts working again (receiving and sending output),
so it looks like we just over loaded the lpd daemon. Is there a limit to
the printcap file? or a limit to the number of lpd that could be spawned? or
the size of our linux partition? (we currently have 128Mb)...

Whoa, now we're talking something completely different. First, from your
Linux/390 system can you ping any of those printers? If you can ping them,
can you telnet to their administration port? If they have a web
administration interface, can you access it from the Linux/390 system? (HPs
with Jetdirect should.) What version of lpr are you running? lprNG, or
lpr? What does the printcap entry for one of these look like (the whole
entry)? What do the file permissions on the spool directory look like
(starting from "/" on down)?

>From my experience, printing setup is a very precise exercise. Get one
thing wrong, and strange things happen. And I do mean strange. When I went
from lpr to lprNG, all my output started going into the bit bucket, because
a parameter that I _had_ to put in with lpr to stop some error messages
caused lrpNG to send the output to /dev/null. We need lots more details
here, so I look forward to seeing them.

Hi Mark,
None of the printers defined to Linux will print. Also we're still on SuSE
7.0 (kernel 2.2.16).

Have you checked out the printer itself? That's what is refusing the
connection. Can you print to other printers?
