No, z/VM is not part of this solution.  What seems to be happening in the
industry is that z/VM has everyone's attention and is the thing to be
emulated on other platforms.  VMWare is how you can bring a software-based
virtualization and partitioning capability to your Intel box.

P.S. I like the reference to the "x360" model; it brings a fond tear to
the eye.  Maybe we'll have "x370" and "x390", too!  (I just hope it's not
a 30-year wait!)  :-)

P.P.S.  Remember that z/VM is written in zSeries assembler language and
PL/X; not readily portable to other h/w.  I don't expect to ever see z/VM
as we know and love it on another h/w platform.  (Sorry, no ressurection
of VM/PC!)  Certainly the concepts in VM could be expected to appear
elsewhere (as they are now doing).  The desire to implement those concepts
may even drive h/w changes....who knows?
