Ken, Sorry to have to report that this is a known problem with recent 2.4 kernels under Hercules. Check back through the Hercules-390 archives (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hercules-390) for further data, and potential workarounds.
Greg Smith reported to this list some time ago that he had traced the issue to a problem with the Linux DASD driver. However, as the issue only seems to occur with Hercules (at this time), we can't hold our breath for a fix ;).
