We use VM:Backup. Gordon's comments are on target. We are only testing
linux and can shut it down when needed. Our largest image is only one
3390-3. The backup time is about 15 minutes. (That includes tape
mounts). VM:Backup is a good choice for complete system backup but the
linux guest must be down for the duration of the backup. If we ever move
to a production environment, we will be looking at a linux level backup
tool. If you already have VM:Backup, it is much better then DDR and
VM:Operator can be used to automate the whole process.

VM:Backup does support backup of minidisks for Linux servers, but it only
backs them up in physical format, not file-level format. It's like DDR,
but
more efficient.
I'm not the owner of VM:Backup on our machines, but it's my understanding
that if any data on any minidisk changes, then an incremental backup will
re-backup the entire minidisk. For large servers or large numbers of
servers, backup times can be long enough to run into production shift.
