Eric, Try `man hostid`
On my SuSE Intel system (9.180.130.22) I get this: root@silica ~> hostid -v Hostid is 3020494466 (0xb4091682) root@silica ~> So hostid in that case is giving the, sort of, little-endian form of 9.180.130.22 (0x09B48216).
