Max,

Which distro are you using?

2.2.16 kernels only support a ldl (linux dasd layout) dasd format.
Modern kernels (2.4.?) support ldl (for support of old Linux) and cdl
(compatible [with OS/390] disk layout).

Cdl is a format that includes dummy OS/390 control blocks in the disk
format so you can bring the device online on MVS (and/or VM).

If you're not using cdl then you can't dump your linux volumes with MVS
ADRDSSU (some OEM utilities have support for ldl).

So the only choice you're left with is an ldl format is Malcolm Beattie's
utility - see http://www.linuxvm.org/Info/HOWTOs/dumprest.html.
