The other machines need to be able to find it, but it's not necessarily the net
mask that's wrong.

I've run Linux under Hercules under Linux using a virtual CTC, and used an IP
address from the network of the host:

LAN network address - 192.168.1.0
Host IP address     - 192.168.1.6
L/390 IP address    - 192.168.1.253

The L/390's CTC was configured as pointopoint and so the netmask 255.255.255.255
is correct.

I used the arp command to configure the host (192.168.1.6) to receive traffic
for 192.168.1.253 on the LAN - all the other machines on the LAN treated the
L/390 virtual box as just another host on the LAN.

The machine 192.168.1.6 picked up the traffic for the guest and directed it via
the pointopoint link.

This is a standard ppp and slip setup.
