I'm not really sure. I thought a little about this when other people starting bringing out blade servers, but at the time I wasn't terribly impressed. Thinking about it a little more, it seems likely that it will have some impact, perhaps most where floor space was a limiting factor. On the other hand, for people running Microsoft operating systems, the licensing costs and Client Access License costs will be relatively unchanged. IBM's solution might have fewer licenses because they're using faster processors, but that's still going to be a big part of the cost equation. Then there's still all the cabling, inventory, system-by-system software upgrades, etc. that won't go away with blade servers. I guess I'm still not terribly impressed (although it _is_ a pretty cool technology, even without IBM's entry into that market).
>From my perspective, this technology won't remove Microsoft's biggest liability (excessive software licensing costs) from the equation between choosing them versus Linux (in general, not just Linux/390). For a floor-space constrained UNIX/Linux shop, it will definitely make moving to a mainframe platform even less attractive than it is today, since they'll be able to stay with the familiar and still grow.
