You never lose that sense of dread.  I've been working with Linux for 2
years and VM for 18 years.  I still watch VM come up every time I IPL and
read every line to make sure I haven't messed something up.  VM, GCS and CMS
together are, what?, maybe 10 million lines of code?  Add TCPIP and all the
Sterling/CA products and it goes to twice that, maybe.  Linux might double
it again?  All of that and all the config files have to be exactly right or
the phone calls start.   A systems programmer's NUMBER ONE job is to keep
his own phone from ringing.

Old adage from an old hand:  You can tell the severity of the problem by the
level of the manager calling you every 20 minutes to ask "Is it fixed yet?"
