As it outlines: install two systems similar to what you want to clone
but different in those areas that you need to fiddle with (ip address,
root password, you name them).

With the Linux 2.4 kernel life is even simpler than with the process
outlined in the redbook. You can now link to the two disks and run
diff against the two filesystems to compare.

And then you sit down with the output of diff and understand what is
to be done.
