Todd,

As others have indicated, using Hercules to run Linux/390 would be good for
what you need. As far as which distribution to use, my response would be
"what's your favorite Linux on other architectures?" (assuming you have
one.) If that one is available for Linux/390, then start with that one.
It'll eliminate a lot of different learning issues until you get to the
point where you're ready to evaluate the rest of them yourself and make a
rational decision. If your favorite is not available (or you don't have
one), then there are a raft of other considerations to take into account.
The popularity of one versus the others is not necessarily a good one.

Having Alan participate in this mailing list has been a tremendous resource
and advantage, no doubt about it, but I wouldn't construe that as any sort
of endorsement of the platform.

Subject: Newbie alert/question!

For someone who has no mainframe experience and no access to an
S390, is running a linux/s390 distro on top of hercules a good way to
learn the procedures necessary to install/run/maintain linux on the S390?

What distro of linux should I run on hercules? I've seen images for
debian but it looks like Suse is the preferred distro for the 390.

By the way, seeing Alan Cox post here certainly gives a good impression
of the momentum behind the linux/S390 movement.

Thanks for the help,
