I actually used TurboLinux 2.2.19. You do not need KDE in order to use the GUI. I set the display parameter on Linux for S/390 to route the window traffic back to my PC running Linux. eg:
export display=172.17.1.100:0 ./install.sh (or whatever the install command is...) The install is all gui, but that shouldn't be a bad thing, all you need the gui for is install and administration.
