Using an ESS system is confusing because the ESS box is making
believe there are actual physical drives hidden somewhere within
it's cabinet. It does for a disk farm what VM does for the CPU.

The actual resources within a Shark may implement a "set of
volumes" using RAID5- but that will be hidden (except for the
slow writes, which the box will just cache anyway) from the
actual mainframe (or whatnot) attached to it. You will probably
want to avoid having the LVM in Linux from implementing it's own
        RAID5 array, though.
