Which 2.4.17 patch are you referring to?
I re-downloaded all 2.4.17 patches from Developerworks on May 14:

This is not the order in which I applied the patches ;)
The only other patches I applied were for resierfs for 2.4.17. All patches applied
cleanly.
For both kernels, all experimental stuff is off in the config.
I have four functional, online paths to the IPL device (see below). The configuration
is exactly the same when I successfully boot the 2.4.7 kernel (I simply run zipl
pointing to the desired kernel, and reboot).
