The problem you describe sounds like a classic MTU-mismatch problem. I and quite a few other people have seen symptoms like this. Things _seem_ to work, but as soon as a larger amount of data gets sent to your terminal, the hang occurs. Check that the MTU for your network device matches that of the rest of your network.
