The combination of UTS Globals BAR and Tape Management Subsystem provides native Linux/390 backups - and of course we do use it in-house.
The tape susbsystem provides commands like "tape -m ABC123" which a user can use to ask for tape ABC123 to be mounted. The tape subsystem will get the tape mounted on a free tape drive and create the special file /dev/tape/ABC123 - so you don't need to know which drive the tape is on. Getting the tape mounted involves either prompting the operator to mount the tape, or if the tape is in a STK silo it will be mounted automatically. BAR uses the tape subsystem to get tapes mounted. Individual users can restore any of *their* own files without sys admin intervention. It does support mt and has it's own utility tm which is a more terse version of mt. If you want to mount a scratch tape with 30 days retention: tape -m -S -K 30 Feel free to contact me offline if you want further info.
