Linux for S/390 pioneer Grede Foundries of Milwaukee, Wisconsin has
recently moved their internet web presence to Linux for S/390.

Linux for S/390 has been growing in acceptance in the industry and at Grede
Foundries there is no exception. Grede has been using Linux on their
mainframe for well over two years and has been quite impressed with the
ability to consolidate systems on to one general purpose machine.

In addition to network utility functions (DNS, email, and network
monitoring), Grede has now implemented DB2 UDB and WebSphere Application
Server (WAS) on their mainframe under Linux for S/390. The front end of this
whole process is IBM's HTTP Server (based on Apache), WAS to provide logic
and serve Java Server Pages, and DB2 UDB for back end data storage. The data
that resides on UDB is either replicated from the VSE/ESA environment or
maintained as part of Grede's web applications.

Three WebSphere virtual machines have been deployed. A production server,
quality assurance test server, and a development server. Two DB2 UDB
virtual machines were implemented, one for production data and the other for
test data which is shared between the quality assurance test and development
WebSphere virtual machines.

This first initiative, to facilitate in house management of web site
development and B2B activities in the future, was to migrate Grede's three
web sites (www.grede.com, www.castsmart.com, and www.brainworks.com) from a
third party local services provider to the new Websphere Application
environment in house. All sites were redeveloped using Java. These sites
contain normal brochureware information and facilities to view customer order
status and shipment information, submit drawings for quotation requests, and
track inventories at outside service vendors.

This project was a cooperative effort between Grede Foundries, Sytek
Services of Bellingham WA (an IBM Business Partner specializing in S/390
hardware sales and VM/Linux software support) and Centare Group of
Brookfield, WI (an IBM Business Partner specializing in WebSphere).

Grede Foundries is running on a Multiprise 3000 H50, with z/VM Version 4.1,
VSE/ESA.

WebSphere is Version 4.0, DB2 UDB is 7.2 and the Linux kernel level is
currently 2.2.19.
