When using 'real' LCS (3172, AWS3172, 2216 AFAIK), as Rob says you must keep the adapter number in mind. Refer to the Linux Device Drivers manual (from Developerworks) for the right parameter in chandev.conf (you said 2.4 kernel, right?).
