Linux 2.2 does not utilize more than 4 effectively. Linux 2.4 will allow defining a larger number of processors, but more than 8 don't seem to help much for "normal" applications. It really depends a lot on how your applications are written -- SMP is a difficult thing to do well and there is still work to be done in Linux to fine-tune the kernal behavior for large numbers of CPUs. SGI has been contributing some interesting work in this area recently.
