One thing to add to Ross's reply, is that typically, the PATH environment
variable doesn't have much in it at that point, if anything.  So, when
you're adding functionality, you need to be careful about specifying
commands with the complete path to them from / on down.  So, if you need to
do a modprobe, for instance, /sbin/modprobe will work (if that's where it's
located on your system), but just plain modprobe will not.
