You still need DB2 Connect.  The DB2 Run Time Client can access DB2 on NT,
AIX and Linux, but DB2 Connect is required for protocol and character set
translation.

DB2 Connect can be installed in the same virtual machine as WAS, but I
typically install it in a seperate virtual machine.  Using z/VM's Guest LAN
support (in 4.2 and 4.3) communcations between the WAS machine, DB2/Connect
and VMs TCP/IP stack (to get to DB2/VM) is very, very fast.
