I tried pinging Holger Smolinski at the email address in the comments of the
DASD driver code, but perhaps someone else knows the answer to this
question.

Are there any plans to update the S390 DASD driver to disband path groups to
a device? Perhaps when the 'set device range=nnn off' command is executed?
Currently, when Linux is IPL'd in an LPAR, it touches every DASD device
accessible to the LPAR, and establishes a path group to each, which it then
hangs on to even if the device is not specified in the parmfile. A solution
is to disable the device to the LPAR via the HMC before the IPL, but
accidents do happen.
