By the way, I wasn't implying that any direction was better or worse than the other (each has its pros & cons) -- I think all the right architectural decisions were made early on. I still remember how pleasantly amazed I was when I saw my first Marist distribution L/390 machine ... how much *alike* it was to all the other hardware implementations I'd seen.
